Being Goalless is the Goal?
This week while reading Mastery by George Leonard I learned to look at setting goals in a new way. I learned not to look at the completion of the goal as where my joy would come but to enjoy the journey not just the destination. This is a useful outlook for me because one of my current "goals" is to live in the moment instead of always what is coming next or what else I need to be doing. I recently asked some family members what they thought was my greatest weakness (I love hearing the brutal truth) and one told me that I need to be more in the moment and I agree so I have been thinking about that personal development lately. My husband is a great example of this idea. He is a very skilled dentist and about five years ago a very time consuming certification process for cosmetic dentistry. We were all so proud of him for all his hard work but he did not see that as the end goal. He continued perfecting his craft and just this year he received another more difficult award now being the 69th dentist only worldwide to reach this level of accreditation. Looking back he said how much his work had improved from five years ago and how he knew in another five years how much better he will become if he keeps working as hard. I shared this idea with my son today who is working hard at becoming the best 1500m runner he can be and I hope it will help him in his future endeavors.
