Compel with a why
It really hit home to me this week when Larry Brilliant shared about this period in history being a great time for entrepreneurs to be philanthropic and about the hope that comes from people looking outward in society. Sometimes I feel that humankind is on a downward spiral and it feels hopeless to change the world but it is by one person at a time setting out to make a difference that changes can be made.
The next point that will stick with me in future endeavors is Sheryl Sandberg's thought of creating "a vision that scales". A vision that will inspire others and compel them with a why is what will truly make a business successful. It will create a culture with that vision that will stand the test of time even when markets and technology change. This does not have to be a non-profit business that entirely focuses on curing disease or likewise, but it does need to serve humanity and fill a gap in the market or in peoples lives.
I can also take these principles into my work as a mother and helping guide my home and children in their own lives. My husband and I need to compel them to act with a why. If children understand the why behind what we are asking them to do then they will be more likely to listen and obey. We have tried to create ideals for our home and have a family culture of trying to follow Jesus Christ, be kind to others, serve, do hard things and grow by stepping out of your comfort zone. However, I do think we need to create a very clear vision for our family as well as for our own personal lives. That life plan with a why will make our family and us personally successful and not have those regrets at the end of our lives.
